Summer Project Helps Rewrite History of “Cannibalistic” Tribe

As part of an URSI and Ford Scholar summer project, Vassar anthropology professor April Beisaw and two students visited several museums in hopes of unraveling a centuries-old mystery about a tribe of Native Americans described by settlers as giant cannibalistic warriors. Legend has it that the tribe that lived in what is now Northeastern Pennsylvania in the 16th and 17th centuries even massacred a neighboring tribe, but the group has found evidence to the contrary.
